This is suitable for voice teachers who have a good overview of our seven principles, have been teaching for 5+ years and will be ready to study for authorization within 6-12 months.

ViP Membership

This is suitable for singers and voice teachers who are earlier on in their journey as singing teachers.  Recent vocal pedagogy graduates, vocal coaches and professional singers training to become singing teachers. 

Being a Member is an important stepping stone towards enrolment on to our Pathway Program. It allows you to embrace the ongoing mentoring and education opportunities available within Vocology in Practice, whilst you continue to work towards meeting the standard required.

Steps To Becoming A ViP Member


 

 

1. Application Form

Complete our application form on this page.
This should only take a few minutes.
Once your form is processed by our Education Committee you will receive a link via email to schedule your consultation call.

A $200 all-inclusive application fee applies which includes an initial consultation, testing, and final interview. 

 

2. Consultation Call

This is a scheduled video call with our Education Director, Clare Silver. Clare will assess your current level of experience, education, and awareness in alignment with our Seven Principles (below). Should she recognize gaps in knowledge and/or experience you can proceed to Step 3 (Pathway Membership). If however, we ascertain that you’re ready for our final assessment you can proceed to Step 4 in our application process.

 

 

3. Pathway Membership

In this 6 month period (from initial consultation), suitable applicants will be offered training tools (webinars, videos, etc.) and guided mentorship to help fill the gaps in vocology knowledge or you may choose to self-study before the final assessment.

 

4. Final Assessment

If your knowledge and experience align with our Seven Principles, you will have a final assessment with our education director and be granted membership. Completion of the assessment consultation requires the following:

  1. Completed Q&A on the Seven Principles
  2. Submission of a recorded lesson with a student
  3. Two letters of recommendation (one from a current ViP member)

Vocology in Practice | 7 Principles


 
 

Artistry

The ability to coach a singer in style and genre, emotional connection to the lyric and authenticity in performance appropriate for the material. This includes helping the original artist find their unique sound and/or working with an artist development team.

Anatomy & Health 

The theory of the anatomy and physiology of the larynx, pulmonary system, throat and mouth and all mechanisms involved with sound production; especially in relation to a well functioning voice. Knowledge of tools that encourage healthy mechanisms and equilibrium in breathing and phonation and the health/rehabilitation aspects of SOVT exercises.

Musicianship

The theory of music and the wider context of music studies and musicality; understanding chords, scales, rhythm and melody and how these apply in the human voice. The ability to hear quality of tone and pitch, guide and distinguish between different music genres and styles of singing. Basic piano and song keys skills.

Voice Science

Source/Filter theory and basic acoustics. Understanding of sound waves, frequencies, harmonics and formants. Application of the anatomy, phonetics and musical scales as affected by changes in the power/source/filter relationship across various registrations. A basic understanding of the use of spectrum viewers and spectrograms.

 

Body & Mind

Basic theory of learning behaviour, neuroscience and neurobiology, student centered teaching and coaching and the emotional aspect of learning and teaching, mindset and thought patterns. Application of differentiation in lesson structure and clear goals with attention to the singers’ learning abilities and needs as an artist and most of all as a human being to develop autonomous life-long learners.

Vocal Pedagogy

Application of vocal exercises for various voice issues, including the effectiveness of certain scales, consonants and vowels in voice habilitation and the syllable combinations’ tendencies to affect the laryngeal muscles and configurations. That includes methods and exercise combinations based on all previous principles. Skills in voice assessment, lesson planning and practice regimen.

Business Practices & Personal/Professional Development 

Understanding of the music and performing arts industry, business ethics, safeguarding and health and safety procedures, time and team management, accounting, curriculum practice, marketing and all other aspects that define your unique value and selling point as a business owner or valuable employee of an educational institution or company.
