David Harris & Laurel Irene
of Voice Science Works

We’re delighted to welcome David Harris and Laurel Irene, co-founders of Voice Science Works, as featured presenters at this year’s retreat, leading a full Thursday afternoon immersion.

David and Laurel are known for translating complex voice science into clear, usable tools. Their workshop will invite everyone in the room to actively explore their voice through listening, language, and awareness.

Together, we'll:

  • Learn to hear overtone clusters in ways that can be meaningfully applied to voice habituation
  • Explore ways of languaging experiences and staying curious about the language we use
  • Develop awareness tools to help amplify deep learning by sidestepping conscious thought.

Somatic Voice Work: Supporting the Body Behind the Voice

This experiential workshop explores how somatic voice work can help singers and voice professionals move beyond sound production alone to address the body, nervous system, breath, and emotional patterns that shape vocal function and expression.

Crystal will demonstrate how somatic principles can be integrated into real coaching sessions, allowing participants to observe her work with singers in the room while applying concepts and tools in real time within their own bodies.

Attendees will then have opportunities to embody the techniques themselves, practice coaching others using these new tools, and explore how somatic voice work can be adapted into their own teaching and coaching style.

Designed for voice teachers, vocal coaches, and voice professionals interested in a more embodied and trauma-informed approach to vocal pedagogy, this workshop offers both practical application and meaningful integration into studio practice.

A Different Kind of Retreat

Most professional development for vocal coaches focuses on delivering as much information as possible.

But real growth rarely comes from information alone.

It happens when new ideas meet your existing experience - when you have the time and space to reflect, question, experiment, and allow your own instincts to come forward.

At From Knowledge to Confident Creative Action, we introduce carefully selected topics drawn from Vocology in Practices seven guiding principles of vocal coaching and artist development.

These ideas are designed to expand your thinking, challenge assumptions, and introduce new creative possibilities in your work.

But just as importantly, this retreat is about unlocking the wisdom and insight you already carry as a coach.

Through collaborative discussion, coaching labs, and reflective exploration, you’ll have the opportunity to:

• engage with new perspectives and approaches
• connect them to your own experience and intuition
• experiment with creative strategies in real coaching contexts
• uncover the instincts and insights that already live within your practice

Rather than overwhelming you with content, this experience is designed to help you integrate what you learn and embody it in your coaching.

The goal is simple:

Not just to know more -
but to coach with greater clarity, creativity, and confidence and show up as your best self.

Why This Retreat Matters Now

Over the past decade, the field of vocal coaching has grown tremendously.

There is more access to research, pedagogy, and technical knowledge than ever before. Coaches today are better informed and more connected to the science of voice than any generation before.

And yet many experienced coaches find themselves asking deeper questions:

  • How do I bring this knowledge fully into my coaching practice?
  • How do I respond creatively to the unique artist in front of me?
  • How do I trust my instincts while still honoring what I’ve learned?
  • How do I help artists grow not just technically, but expressively and authentically?

These questions point to the next stage of development for many vocal coaches.

Not simply acquiring more information, but integrating knowledge, experience, intuition, and creativity into a more embodied coaching practice.

This is where the work of the coach becomes more nuanced, more collaborative, and more artist-centered.

From Knowledge to Confident Creative Action was designed to support this stage of development. It offers space to engage with new ideas while also uncovering the deeper instincts, insight, and creative voice that experienced coaches already carry within their work.

Because great coaching doesn’t happen through knowledge alone - it happens when knowledge, experience, and intuition come together in the moment - in service of the artist.

This retreat is an invitation
